On the Road with Timelab – An Excursion to Loos-en-Gohelle (France)
A Living Example of Socio-Ecological Transformation
How can a former coal mining town become a beacon of resilience and sustainability? What happens when a community actively reclaims its future?
We invite you to explore these questions with us on a one-day trip to Loos-en-Gohelle, a small town in Northern France that has become a model for ecological and cultural transformation. Since the end of coal production in 1986, the town has undergone a radical shift—rooted in community engagement, cultural policy, and ecological innovation.
What to Expect?
Together, we’ll visit inspiring local actors and hear stories of real change from the ground up. In particular, we’ll learn from CD2E, a regional organization at the forefront of driving awareness and implementing ecological transition.
Loos-en-Gohelle is not a distant vision of sustainability—it’s a living laboratory of how local, participatory strategies can reshape urban life. The town’s cultural policy has been key: it empowers residents to co-create their environment, shaping futures grounded in care, ownership, and connection.
During the excursion, we’ll:
- Learn how participatory cultural policy can drive lasting transformation
- Hear firsthand from local practitioners about the successes and obstacles they’ve encountered
- Explore how ecological transition can become a tool for emancipation, not just adaptation
- Reflect together on what this example can mean for our own practices and communities

Een levende voorbeeldstad van sociaal-ecologische transformatie
Hoe kan een voormalige mijnstad uitgroeien tot een baken van veerkracht en duurzaamheid? Wat gebeurt er wanneer een gemeenschap haar toekomst actief in eigen handen neemt?
We nodigen je uit om deze vragen samen met ons te verkennen tijdens een ééndaagse reis naar Loos-en-Gohelle, een klein stadje in Noord-Frankrijk dat is uitgegroeid tot een model voor ecologische en culturele transformatie. Sinds de sluiting van de mijnen in 1986, heeft de stad een radicale koerswijziging doorgemaakt – geworteld in gemeenschapsbetrokkenheid, cultuurbeleid en ecologische innovatie.
Wat kun je verwachten?
Samen bezoeken we inspirerende lokale actoren en luisteren we naar verhalen van échte verandering, van onderuit opgebouwd. We krijgen onder meer inzichten van CD2E, een regionale organisatie die toonaangevend is in het stimuleren van bewustwording én het realiseren van ecologische transitie op het terrein.
Loos-en-Gohelle is geen toekomstvisie, maar een levend laboratorium voor hoe lokale, participatieve strategieën steden kunnen heruitvinden. De stad hanteert een vernieuwend cultuurbeleid dat bewoners in staat stelt om hun omgeving actief mee vorm te geven — gebaseerd op zorg, eigenaarschap en verbondenheid.
Tijdens deze excursie:
- Ontdekken we hoe participatief cultuurbeleid kan leiden tot duurzame verandering
- Horen we van lokale initiatiefnemers over hun ervaringen, successen én uitdagingen
- Verkennen we hoe ecologische transitie een instrument voor emancipatie kan worden, en niet enkel aanpassing
- Reflecteren we samen over wat deze case betekent voor onze eigen praktijken en contexten
