The Janitor models hosting without performance: offering continuity and care without framing the space as a service or an event.
Wim Cuyvers’ figure of the Janitor articulates a stance toward place, architecture, and landscape that is fundamentally different from authorship, mastery, or intervention.
The Janitor:
does not initiate the system,
does not define its future,
does not seek visibility or ownership,
stays with maintenance, care, and attentiveness.
This resonates strongly with Josina Vink’s argument that systemic change happens through ongoing, embodied habits rather than expert-driven transformation. The Janitor works within a living system, responding to what is there, adjusting conditions, repairing, cleaning, opening, closing, waiting.
At Montavoix, the landscape is not redesigned; it is kept possible.
